Southwest Secondary Learning Center

Southwest Secondary Learning Center was the first technology-based charter high school in New Mexico. The students, parents, and teachers work together to design an individual growth plan with an individualized curriculum. The school emphasizes content mastery rather than required instructional time.

Computers are the main tools for instruction. Students learn and manipulate the technology in real world applications. Students develop the reading, writing, mathematical, technological and problem solving skills necessary for success in post-secondary education and careers. The school has been certified by the North Central Accreditation Association as a college preparatory school.

The school’s concurrent enrollment agreements with CNM, UNM, and NM Tech have provided students with the opportunity to complete college credits while attending high school. Southwest Secondary Learning Center students are enrolled in more concurrent college courses than students from any other district high school, and they earn higher grades than any other high school students in concurrent classes.

Individual progress is tracked on a daily basis and adjustments are made to the learning program to insure the greatest academic achievement by the individual student. The majority of the students enrolled at the school consistently perform above the scores required by the state to make Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Law of 2001.

Knowledgeable, practical, and successful leadership has secured funds from multiple sources to enhance the educational program provided for the students and school staff. Well-trained, technology savvy teachers are provided with a variety of professional development opportunities and motivational experiences.

After six years, the school enjoys a permanent facility that includes an indoor soccer field, basketball court and state-of-the-art exercise equipment. The school is part of the Southwest Learning Centers. Creating the ideal “one room school house” for the 21st century requires the right balance of technology infrastructure, thoughtful decisions about school size and student groupings, proactive leadership and continued community support.
