Southwest Intermediate
Southwest Intermediate Learning Center is the new middle school within the Southwest Learning Centers beginning with a seventh grade class. Working together, the students, parents, and teachers design an individual growth plan for personalizing each student’s curriculum. As one of the Governor’s Laptop Initiative sites, 7th grade students were given laptop computers in order to develop their computer skills and abilities. In addition, the computers are used as tools for instruction. The small learning community personalizes the transition to a high school computer-based model. Emphasis is on developing personal responsibility in academics and behavior to insure success at the next level.A community-based program approach provides students with a full day of community instruction twice a month. The out-of-school instruction, fully integrated with the core subjects, is planned and guided by the teaching staff. These community experiences (such as trips to local and state museums, performances at Popejoy Hall and visits to historical sites) support student social growth and responsibility. A specific lead teacher is assigned to the middle school students with assistance from the other center instructional staff in providing the full academic program. Balancing the middle school curriculum, community projects and computer use is thoughtfully planned by the staff.
Southwest Intermediate Learning Center has benefited from being a part of the Southwest Learning Centers. They share new facilities and state-of-the-art technology as well as the experienced leadership that has made Southwest Secondary Learning Center successful.
