Embry-Riddle launches high school space flight course
by Thomas Munro New Mexico Business Weekly Staff

An innovative Albuquerque charter high school and an international aeronautics university are teaming up to give teens a unique chance to explore the space flight industry.

Southwest Secondary Learning Center, a charter school focused on science, math and college prep, will offer "Introduction to Space Flight" beginning in the spring semester. The course will be taught by an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University adjunct professor and honest-to-goodness rocket scientist, Sam Baty.

Scott Glasrud, chief financial officer and co-founder of Southwest Learning Centers, a consortium of three Albuquerque charter schools, said his school's innovative pedagogical model has consistently produced many of the highest test scores among the public schools in the state. At Southwest Secondary, every student works at his or her own pace, largely in an on-line environment.

The school also provides technology -- such as a wind tunnel, a recording studio and a flight simulator -- rarely found in secondary schools. Southwest Secondary helps set students on high-tech career paths through agreements with businesses and institutions of higher learning, such as its contract with Bode Aviation and dual-enrollment agreement with Central New Mexico Community College to provide flight training to students interested in aeronautics.
