English Expo provides students with the opportunity to let their talents shine with competitions ranging from poetry writing, to photo essays, to storytelling. Some of the entries are prepared before the event and some competitions are held "on-the-spot." Check out the list of competition categories and their criteria in the list below.

English Expo Categories and Scoring Criteria
(Students select two categories for competition--only one speaking category. Juniors 6-8; Seniors 9-12)
A--Posters Students prepare the posters ahead of time on any topic that promotes some aspect of English language arts. Contest Criteria
B--Book Cover Students prepare the book covers ahead of time on any book listed on their grade-level reading list. Student must read the book and be prepared to answer content questions from judges. Contest Criteria
C--Literature Students take a 100-question multiple choice test graded on Scantron. Questions come from each book on the reading list. Contest Criteria
D--Business Letters Students write business letters from information. Contest Criteria
E--Social Notes Students write social notes from information given. Contest Criteria
F--Poetry Students write at least eight lines of verse based on a prompt given during the contest. Contest Criteria
G--Prose Students are given a prompt and may be asked to write a descriptive passage, a persuasive essay, a compare and contrast essay, a short biographical sketch, etc. Contest Criteria
H--Personal Narrative Students will tell their own stories in writing based on a list of 3-5 topics related to life experiences. Contest Criteria
I--Short-Story - Fantasy Students are given a choice of 3-5 scenarios which describe a conflict and a subject. From this, students will develop a short story in the fantasy genre. Contest Criteria
J--Short-Story - Teen Life Students Students are given a prompt describing a conflict. From this, students will develop a short story centered around teen life. Contest Criteria
K--Team Dialogue Students are given a choice of 3-5 scenarious which describe a situation. From this information, students will develop a dialogue that resolves the problem. Contest Criteria
L--Technical Writing Students are given a situation where they have to write how something works in clear, precise language. Contest Criteria
M--Listening Students will take a 50-100 question multiple choice test graded on Scantron. The test will be based on a selection. Contest Criteria
N--Proofreading Students will take a 75-100question multiple choice test graded on Scantron. Questions will be asked over various rules of grammar. Contest Criteria
O--Vocabulary Students will take a 75-100-question multiple choice test graded on Scantron. Questions will be asked over vocabulary words in context and in isolation. Contest Criteria
P--Storytelling - Original Students will prepare to tell an original story to "weave entertainment out of nothing but words." Contest Criteria
Q--Storytelling - Traditional Students will prepare to tell a traditional story to "weave entertainment out of nothing but words." Contest Criteria
R--Informative Speaking Students will prepare an informative speech to provide useful or interesting factual information to an audience. Contest Criteria
S--Declamation Students will memorize a famous speech and deliver it to an audience. Contest Criteria
T--Poetry Recitation Students will memorize a poem and deliver it to an audience. Contest Criteria
U--Children's Book Students prepare a children's book which is age appropriate for younger children, grades 5 and below. Contest Criteria
V--Photographic Essay Students take a series of photos on a topic or a related topic and write no more than 100 words about the relationship of the photos. Contest Criteria
W--Written Presentation Students prepare and mount one-page samples of calligraphy and during the contest students create sample pieces. Contest Criteria
